Years ago, rural communications meant delivering “plain old telephone service” to farms and towns across the country. Today, it means much more. CoBank finances the construction, operation and maintenance of vital communications systems throughout rural America including the expansion of fiber optic networks and broadband Internet along with upgrades in wireless technology and satellite TV.
In rural America, only 60 percent of households use broadband Internet service, according to a 2011 report from the U.S. Department of Commerce. That is 10 percent less than urban households. But CoBank’s customers are helping to close that so-called “digital divide” and helping rural America stay competitive in an increasingly competitive – and connected – global economy.
